World Finalist Scavenger Hunt Program Design

FINALIST APP TECHNOLOGY FOR MANLY AMAZING SCAVENGER HUNT RACE DESIGN FEATURES

We were surprised this month in being informed of our selection into the finalist for a European app design.  Now we had not initiated or formally applied nor bribed our way in, but were chosen because of the clever way we had integrated new GPS app technology into our outdoor amazing races and scavenger hunts.  Below is an image from their electronic magazine showing our cool design features and pages used in the Manly Amazing Scavenger Hunt Race. In their words;

“Games can’t be more international than this. A scavenger hunt in the city of Manly, Australia. This teambuilding activity takes place all over town and lets you preform all kinds of physical challenges, from a human pyramid to making team tattoos. Great work!”  For more information on Manly Scavenger Hunt

Page design award for manly amazing scavenger race

One of the challenges is making sure that each of the pages are clever in their look, reflect the uniqueness of the location and give an impression to the team of the originality that we are seeking in doing the program.  We at Scavenger Hunt Australia have invested heavily in technology seeing enormous improvements in the accuracy of GPS technology, creativity in the design of pages and now with the recent introduction of augment technology games.

We are pleased to announce today that the company Leica Microsystems have selected Scavenger Hunt Australia for their upcoming team challenge that we will be running in early February. More news will be coming on their scavenger hunt event with some unique customisation that will include the Ransom Note Challenge. This will involve teams being given a mission in the beginning of the program of assisting in a rescue mission and  they will need to recover and secure enough money for the Ransom exchange.  Of course this is all in the name of fun and teamwork. Ransom note adds a team plot to the scavenger hunt theme and of course some drama making the event different in the way it starts and finishes. Information on the Ransom Note Scavenger Hunt.

Canberra Scavenger Hunt

“Everybody loved the Amazing Scavenger Race too, they all want to do another one.  Thanks again mate !”   MBE ORGANISER

We are delighted to be working with MBE on their annual conference in January 2107 and collaborating to develop our first Canberra Scavenger Hunt utilising Uber car ride through the best parts of Canberra and then by foot in the central city areas.  This will up the ante on strategy as teams will need to decide where there priorities are in terms of which areas of the city they choose to cover first.  We are including parliament house, lake area of Canberra, and to our surprise heaps of interesting locations in the downtown area.  All in all there will be 30 GPS location markers to be found each with their own special distinctive team challenge.  Below is specific fit for purpose map for the downtown area section by foot – key being having high density area of hotspots so teams can really get stuck into the fun challenges without wasting too much down time travelling.

Map Canberra Amazing Scavenger Race

Without doubt the trap in Canberra is not over using monuments as this is repetitive so we have had to be crafty and look harder to find interesting nooks and cranny that are worthy locations to be included in the Canberra Scavenger Hunt program. We incorporated car and by foot elements, so the team were able to mix the two and had to choose how to best use their time, strategy was key.

In the pristine environment of Canberra were these hidden art murals.  Such gems.

Here is a teams version of the flag tower on top of Parliament House that needed a new version made of.

How is this one – is it special effects or is it real?  Great team photo.

Right in the down town area we are able to utilise some clever portrait faces.

Here is another team at the same spot.

Canberra is not only famous for its roundabouts but also its zebra crossings.

Here is a nice interpretation by a team of this fashion poster.

In the image below you can see how teams use an ipad to reference the map to find the GPS location marker nearby.  Once this is located by the team the team challenge unlocks where points are up for grabs.

Thanks to all the teams who participated in our first Canberra Amazing Scavenger Race, loads of fun and a great day for all those participating.

GPS Scavenger Hunt

GPS Scavenger Hunt

GPS Scavenger Hunt

With the advent of new software and apps purpose built maps for each scavenger hunt are assembled.  Each map shows approximately 30 GPS markers for any single event. A marker can be placed anywhere, in any location; a park, street corner, museum entrance, shop any where.

GPS Scavenger Hunt requires that each team physically find a GPS marker and unlock it.  By being within 20 metres of that spot the team assignment is then revealed on the screen of their iPhone or ipad. How cool is that?

It may not be possible to find and complete all of the GPS markers in the allocated time. So which one they do first and in what order is entirely up to the team.

We recommend that teams at the start of the program become familiar with their compass instrument that guides them to each GPS hotspot to unlock their team assignment. This is an easy skill to learn and takes just a few minutes to practise on their phone or Ipad.

Major benefits of a GPS Scavenger Hunt include;

  1. Integration of really cool hi tech hi touch software into the program and less reliance on paper scavenger hunts
  2. Clever capabilities of augment reality and puzzles into the software
  3. Teams do not need to follow a single scavenger hunt route so there is no over lapping or cheating or crowding

Scavenger Hunt has invested heavily in this capability and intends to use it more and more as we find the younger generations love having something in their hand that is hi tech. It also means that groups that have done a scavenger hunt in the past will not have experienced of a similar nature or anything like this before. Have a look at scavenger hunt technology for more info.

Imagine in a zoo scavenger hunt where GPS markers are located within or next to animal pens where the team assignment is unveiled before their eyes and is tailored specifically to the reptile section they are in.  This is very cool and with the use of great imagery makes the experience of a higher order. An example of this can be seen – for more info is zoo scavenger hunt.

Themed Scavenger Hunt

Themed Scavenger Hunt

From time to time we have been asked about having a scavenger hunt with a particular theme to add some drama and fun to the creativity of the event.  We began with the Super Heroes Scavenger Hunt where team members choose their favourite marvel character and can come dressed up for the themed scavenger hunt event.  This has even been popular with parties and hens or bucks where dressing up is part of the celebration.

The Themed Scavenger Hunt is then built around the characters and so are all the challenges.  This makes it so much more fun for everyone on the program. Come and join us on one!

I look regularly at my posts so do not hesitate to ask us any question and our programs whether it is for a private or corporate event.

Beach Treasure Hunt

Beach Treasure Hunt

Beach Treasure Hunt with GPS Markers

Beach treasure hunt are very popular events as there is so much life and activity that can be included into the program. They also have all the best of the outdoor life right at your feet to include into amazing beach treasure hunt program.

With GPS technology we can now put markers on an electronic map showing in the best and most unusual locations on the beach.  Places can include hiding treasures in the sand (using metal detectors to find them), torn maps and that are missing critical bits of information.  It is amazing that with technology we can now better utilise the beach environment and incorporate uniques aspects of the beach environment into a treasure hunt program.

Things to look for in the design of the beach treasure hunt program include;

  1. Murals and art work
  2. Lifeguards and signs pertaining to the beach including warnings
  3. Ice cream sellers and asking them to be involved
  4. Cafe life and shops along the beach edge finding menus or items that can used
  5. Activities right on the waters edge so that they can wet

Also with a clock timer we can make GPS spots fade and re appear so that the time to access them is through a limited window of time. This adds more suspense, excitement and tension for each team. So why not come and join us on a beach treasure hunt.

Scavenger Hunt Celebration

Scavenger Hunt Celebration

May the best team win!

Post event is all about sharing stories and having a scavenger hunt celebration.

It is really important to have a place after the event for everyone on the team to unwind, share stories and reconnect. We recommend that it is better to eat post event than before so it is part of the scavenger hunt celebration.  We find there is so much more energy and shared experiences to chat on.

As part of scavenger hunt celebration it is possible to have each team to award or give one to their own team members to cap off the day.

We use our own electronic scoreboard so we get a real time update on each ipad screen on how each team has gone.  So it is a matter of reading these out to announce the best overall performing team.

The celebration can also include a brief recap on some of the most amazing photos and to highlight their originality.  This is a nice touch as people like to hear about what other teams have done.

Can also connect to any theme that the client has around teamwork, collaboration, leadership, agility are really good themes.

What is wrong with our Scavenger Hunt?

It takes a lot of work to design a good scavenger hunt program.  Most of my clients have no idea on the amount of research that is required to put one together.

Scavenger Hunt program design can fall into four common traps in their design.  Lets deal with each one separately.

  1. Too much time running around tiring the group out and not enough on the actual challenges. This is a common flaw and there is always some one in the group that has some ailment so this needs to be considered.
  2. Too many clues are like being at a museum and are asking for information from the local area and not enough creativity or physically engaging assignments. The Scavenger Hunt program becomes more like a school excursion and has lost its creative team based flair.
  3. The Scavenger Hunt is too complex and interconnected. Teams need to find an item in order to complete a map or an assignment but are bogged down and cannot solve it.  Better to not over complicate the design of the scavenger hunt or be there at this points to assist the teams should this happen.
  4. Teams misread a clue and end up in an area completely out of scope from where the program is being run.  This is rare but does happen. Teams need to have some idea in terms of distance where they are going.
  5. Scavenger Hunt program is a task list of things to find from the local area.  Works for a short time frame but is one dimensional in its architecture.
